Losing a loved one in a car accident is something no one should ever have to experience. Unfortunately, many people in Kansas City go through this tragedy each year. When negligent drivers are distracted, intoxicated or fail to follow traffic laws, it can put others on the road in life or death situations. Sadly, this is exactly what happened to one man’s family last weekend.
As he got in his car and drove away after his shift ended at 3 a.m. Saturday morning, a 29-year-old employee of the Kansas City Police Department likely had no reason to think these would be his last minutes alive. However, a speeding car suddenly crashed into the man’s vehicle, ripping it in half. The young man did not survive the crash.
As family and friends gathered on Wednesday to remember the man, they consoled one another and shared stories of his life. His father said being a policeman was his son’s dream. His parents were very proud to call him their son. Now, however, they are left to face the fact that he is no longer with them. While the driver who caused the crash was charged with involuntary manslaughter, criminal charges are not enough for all families.
In situations like this, some families feel that filing a wrongful death lawsuit is the best reaction. A wrongful death lawsuit, if successful, can hold a negligent driver accountable for his or her actions while resulting in compensation for the victim’s funeral and burial costs. With money matters taken care of, family members are free to focus on helping one another through such a difficult time.
